List of places to wear face coverings in England extended

Government is now recommending that face coverings are worn in additional indoor settings – this will be enforceable in law (England).

Currently you are required to wear face coverings in shops, supermarkets, indoor shopping centres, indoor transport hubs and public transport. For members of the public, from 8 August this will be expanded to include:

  • cinemas and theatres
  • bingo and concert halls
  • museums, galleries, aquariums, or other indoor tourist, heritage or cultural sites
  • nail, beauty, hair salons and barbers – other than where necessary for treatments
  • public areas in hotels/hostels and guest accommodation
  • libraries and public reading rooms
  • community centres and social clubs
  • indoor entertainment venues (amusement arcades, funfairs, adventure activities, go-karting, escape rooms)
  • storage and distribution facilities.

The recommendation is to wear face coverings in these settings now, and it will be mandatory from 8 August. Note: the advice is different in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales – read more details here.
