Moving into Tier 3 (England) on 16 December: holiday accommodation and hospitality

More areas – including London, parts of Essex and Hertfordshire – are moving into Tier 3 from 00.01 on 16 December. This means that in those places under very high alert:

  • accommodation such as holiday parks, campsites, hotels, B&Bs and guest houses must close. There are several exemptions, such as for those who use these venues as their main residence, and those requiring the venues where it is reasonably necessary for work or education and training
  • hospitality settings, such as bars, pubs, cafes and restaurants are closed – they are permitted to continue sales by takeaway, click-and-collect, drive-through or delivery services.

What happens to anyone currently on holiday within a Tier 3 area?

The Visitor Economy guidance states: They can remain until it is practical to return home. At the time when restrictions are introduced, if people are currently on holiday in a group including people who are not in their household or bubble and it is not reasonable for them to curtail their stay, they may finish their holiday as planned but should follow the new social distancing rules as much as possible.

However, for those placed under Tier 3 restrictions, their stay should only be as long as reasonably necessary, and they should return home as soon as practical. They should make every effort to reduce socialising indoors outside of their household whilst in holiday accommodation in the meantime.
