Proposal to ban smoking in beer gardens and other outside public spaces

Smoking in certain outdoor spaces could be banned under radical new proposals to curb the number of smokers in the UK.

Smoking should be banned in outdoor places such as beer gardens, areas outside cafes and beaches, according to a recent independent review.  Downing Street is, however, reported to be hesitant about introducing the ban to beer gardens, saying that the Government-commissioned review into smoking will be “carefully considered”.

The independent review into tobacco control was led by Dr Javed Khan, the former Barnardo’s chief executive. It follows targets to make England “smoke-free” by 2030, defined as cutting smoking rates to just 5%.
